When applications for rooms in college dormitories for next year opened recently, announcement was made by the bursar that new additions to the College plant, providing accommodations for 1661 students, now practically assure that no student will have to seek a room outside of College buildings or fraternity houses unless he wishes to do so. The new Tuck School unit and the dormitory group on the edge of the College Park behind Payerweather Row, including Woodward, Ripley, and Smith Halls, will be ready for occupation next year. Richardson Hall will be remodeled during the summer, and Hubbard and Reed Halls will be removed from dormitory use. Second year students in the Thayer School and the Medical School will be eligible for dormitory rooms for the first time.
Hubbard Hall is to be torn down during the year, and Reed will be remodeled for the public uses of the College in the near future. The passing of Hubbard will remove the last of the wooden dormitories, leaving only a part of Crosby Hall of the old frame construction. Less than 9% of the dormitory space will then be of the type that is not fire-resisting, while 76% will be of the type that is called completely "fireproof," a dormitory condition that is equalled in only a few colleges.
There are accommodations for 105 in the two new Tuck School dormitories, Chase and Woodbury Houses. The third floor of Chase House will be occupied by members of the faculty, with second year students of Tuck School occupying the rest of the building. First and second year Tuck School students are expected to fill most of Woodbury House.
Stell Hall, the refectory of the Tuck School unit, will provide board upon a basis not as yet fully determined.
Accommodations for 169 students will be provided in Woodward, Ripley, and Smith Halls. Average rental per year per man will be approximately $170, with the range extending from $100 to $280. The average rental in all the dormitories is estimated at slightly under $200, ranging from $80 to $320.
