If Dartmouth has ever deserved the title of the winter sports college, it certainly has in the past month. Since Christmas vacation skiing conditions have been perfect, and since that same vacation the undergraduate body has turned to skis en masse. This time it is not the case of that rugged group of outdoor enthusiasts of whom we have always been aware; it involves the whole college. The ski craze has found root in every type of student from the worried little freshman to the nonchalant senior.
We wandered out to the golf links the other afternoon and with amazement watched the mass of gliding figures that covered Occom Ridge. And we were even more surprised to note the dexterity and skill shown by all. Gone was the old awkwardness and beginners' clumsiness—these men were doing Christies and Telemarks and practicing jumps. They were confident, exhilarated and full of enthusiasm.
Among the reasons v; can think of to explain this skiing trend are the facts that Otto Schniebs, the new Green ski coach, has enrolled an enthusiastic following under his tutelage, that the recreational department has spread out and now has over 200 members, that snow conditions have been perfect, that throughout the country this winter there has been a decided and very noticeable trend toward skiing, and that after all we know of no place like Hanover for convenient skiing.
