Announcement was made recently by President Hopkins of a gift of $500 by Senator George Higgins Moses '90 to establish endowment for an annual prize to be awarded in the field of Political Science and to be known as the James Fairbanks Colby Prize. At the suggestion of Senator Moses and with the approval of the department of Political Science the prize will be offered in the form of books. Starting in 1932 the award will be made each year to a member of the graduating class by the department of Political Science from among the students who have majored in that department. Scholastic achievement and capacity for successful activity after graduation in the field of public service will be the determining factors in selecting the recipient for the award.
James Fairbanks Colby, for whom the prize is to be named, graduated from Dartmouth with the class of 1872. From 1885 until 1916 he served the College as Joel Parker Professor of Law and Political Science, retiring in 1916 to become Professor Emeritus. Senator Moses has asked that the prize be named for Professor Colby "in recognition of the respect and affection which I have felt for so many years for Doctor Colby as instructor, citizen and associate in public service, and as a friend."
