Just a year ago, Arthur B. Norton '23 was finishing a 30,000 mile trip by automobile, covering the United States. He traveled through 45 of the 48 states and six Canadian provinces. Arthur has many fine pictures and is well able to give a lecture on scenic America and its National Parks. Perhaps we can get him here at the Club some night to tell us a few of his experiences.
Byron G. Dodge '28 sailed for Europe September 2 on his honeymoon. When he and his bride return from Holland and Paris, they will live at the Gansevoort, 95 Christopher St., New York city. Hamilton Hagar '28 was an usher at his wedding.
We would like to take this opportunity to let the Club members know that Otto F. Taylor '10 has been doing the auditing of the books since the Club started. Otto has donated his own time (and a lot of it too) and given the services of the accountants in his firm at cost. The Club has been most fortunate in being able to call on such a capable firm as Webster, Blanchard, and Taylor.
For the past year a small group of enthusiastic racqueteers have been directing their energies to the entrance of a team in the Metropolitan League. Only last week official notice was received that the Association has voted favorably on the application. This League is probably the most exclusive athletic organization in New York, and it was largely through the help of Ray DeVoe '16 that our efforts were successful. Ray represents the University Club and is one of the highest ranking players in the country. Other clubs in the League include Harvard, Union League, Racquet and Tennis, Yale, Heights Casino, Crescent, and Princeton.
Ort Hicks '21 has been appointed to represent Dartmouth on the Executive Council, with Harry Chamberlaine '21 as alternate. Chuck Webster '26 will captain the team. Other players of promise are John Goss '19, Jack Hubbell '21, mascot, Carl Allen '22, Mac Johnson '21, Bud Weser '28. It is hoped that this squad will be greatly augmented before the first match.
Dartmouth will start with a team of five men in the Class C division of the League. The home matches will be played on the courts in the Fraternities Club Building next door. We are exceedingly fortunate in having for coaches Walter Kinsella and Tom Plower. Mr. Kinsella has held the National Championship in both court tennis and squash tennis, and is now concentrating his attention on squash racquets.
An inter-club contract bridge league has been formed, of which the Club is a member;— Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Pennsylvania, and Dartmouth. A team of eight or more will be chosen every other week to play one of the other clubs with an official referee from the Metropolitan Bridge League to supervise all games.
There will be a great deal of contract bridge activity this winter at the Club, and the rating of all players will be kept so the better players can be chosen for these teams.
If you like to play contract, come around any day at lunch time or late afternoon and you will usually find a game where you can either cut in or be a fourth. Some of the most ardent followers of the game are T. Brown '06, Hal Halstead '11, Joe Kinney '10, Homer MacVean '31, Ed Redman '06, Cy Aschenbach '23, Craw Pollock '28, Bob Williams '27, Howard Myers '17, Josh Davis '27, Charlie Milham 'O6, Jack Steeves '11, Brice Disque '25, Ort Hicks '21, Jack Hubbell '21, Bud Weser '28, Kip Chase '30, and many others.
