James S. Proctor died the morning of January 9 at Deaconess Hospital in Boston, of pneumonia. Classmates attended the funeral January 11 at his home, 66 Orchard Road, Swampscott. Jim was manager of freshman football in college, and a member of Theta Delta Chi. Since graduation he has been associated with the investment firm of Proctor, Cook & Co., at 50 Congress St., Boston. His brother, George N. Proctor '05, and J. W. Peirce '05 are members of the firm. June 18, 1913, Jim married Hazel Claire Macklin of Detroit, Mich. News of his death came too late to be fully reported in this issue of the MAGAZINE. Art Lewis arranged to have flowers from the class at the funeral, and notified classmates in Boston of Jim's death.
Larry Treadway, the big hotel and tavern man, has added a new hostelry to his chain. This time it is the Botsford Tavern in Framingham, Mich. It is understood that the acquisition of this hotel in Michigan is the direct result of Henry Ford's satisfaction with the manner in which Tread and his helpers have conducted the Dearborn Inn.
String Hale has had his picture taken, and it is added to the gallery of 'OB men. This is the only print that has come in for several months. There is a rather puzzling collection right now. So many fine pictures that it is a mighty interesting array, and yet with so many missing that one wishes the collection might be completed before the reunion next June. That's something that can be done with the help of the men themselves, and without their help it is impossible.
Bob Marsden's wife Mary is gaining steadily, after a critical illness and operation last fall. They report a few visits from classmates at their home in Hanover.
Joe Donahue, now a member of the Boston Finance Committee, is said to be so busy that one has to make appointments weeks in advance to have a glimpse of him. We haven't proved this, but it is the report of Boston men.
Bill Knight has retired from his office as state's attorney in Rockford, Ill., and is now devoting all his time to the practice of law. That's the only word we've had from any of the many Western '08ers in recent months. Our Western press service seems to have broken down entirely.
Quite a number of nice Christmas cards from classmates were in the pile on the library table. To prove we opened and read 'em, here's what we found in one from Dick Peebles: "Was married June 30 to Nell Paxton of Ashland." The address is 809 Rogers Court, Ashland, Ky. We think Dick plans to do right by our Nell, and that means bring her to Hanover next June to celebrate their first wedding anniversary along with his 25th reunion.
The death of Joe Chase on December 31 is reported elsewhere. Joe was ill quite a while, and his courage and cheerfulness won the admiration of everybody in Concord. His death, by the way, leaves Thatcher Worthen '07 as the sole survivor of the '07 golf team that had Worthen and Russell Peck of '07, Chase and Porter Smith '08, and Henry Stucklen '09.
