Luncheon Club of Newark
February 1933

The last regular luncheon meeting was held at the Newark Athletic Club on Thursday, December 15. The high record of attendance established at the November meeting was closely approached, with twenty-nine alumni on hand.

The speaker of the day was Russell Durgin 1915, who addressed the gathering on the subject of "Japan and Manchuria." Coming at this time when the problems of the Far East are most vividly before us, the topic was of especial interest. Mr. Durgin was well qualified to describe it after spending upwards of ten years in the Orient in the service of the Y. M. C. A. and on numerous international commissions of a social nature. He returned to the United States last summer in the unusual position of being the only American member of the Japanese delegation to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles. Mr. Durgin briefly traced the histories of Japan and China since the turn of the century as a background for present problems. The gravity of the situation as something more than merely a bilateral argument became forcibly apparent to those who were privileged to hear the discussion.

The class of 1915 continues its great work in making these meetings successful by providing another speaker, this time Gilbert Swett, who will address the January gathering on the subject of "Aviation."

As this letter goes to the editor rumor is confirmed of the return of Princeton to the Dartmouth football schedule. To those responsible for this series we in New Jersey extend our hearty and sincere thanks. More on this subject will undoubtedly be forthcoming in subsequent letters.

The Secretary continues to hope that alumni in this district who may not have received notices of these luncheons through the mail will signify their interest in being placed on our list by dropping a line to the address below.
