CARNIVAL! And in the ranks of the Outing Club there is that hectic hurry and scramble, so confused and yet so gloriously thrilling, that can be appreciated only by one who has seen Carnival loom up but a matter of days ahead, with countless details yet to be completed, perhaps with snow-prayers to be made even more urgent. Cabin and Trail throwing its full support behind the plans of the committee; a hundred heelers toiling frantically but eagerly, Carnival must go on!
The program printed here in full presents an adequate idea of the scope of the two-day festivities. But two aspects of the program demand further attention, the opening evening's program and the prospects for an unusually colorful winter sports competition.
The "King Winter's Court" of 1931 and the Schneefest "Winter Wins His Queen" of 1932 struck a new high point in Carnival winter sports pageantry. Continuing the tradition 1933 will see a "Schweizer Schutzenfest" (a Swiss shooting festival in ordinary life) unrolled amid the show of fireworks, music, song, fancy skating, and all manner of skiing, fancy, comic and otherwise, to say nothing of the presence of the Carnival Queen.
Winter sports competition, always the Carnival feature, will this year present an unusual array of stars. Of special interest to Dartmouth, L. E. Wakefield '33 of Minneapolis, four times winner at Lake Placid Intercollegiate figure skating, and J. A. Shea '34, Dartmouth's Olympic Speed Skating champion, will be out to protect their ice laurels, while the two Goldthwait brothers of Hanover, proficient on skis and skates alike, and H. S. Woods '36 of Hanover, who outjumped countless older and more experienced jumpers at last year's Carnival, can be counted on to do their part. Outstanding among opposing competitors will be New Hampshire's Olympic skiier, E. J. Blood, Hanover resident.
