Lots of excitement when North Fayer- weather caught fire in the middle of one cold forenoon . . . discovered by Janitor Smalley in Room 20 occupied by John Detlefsen 'OB, and Osborne Shenstone '10. Mister Smalley stuck his head out a window with chin in his hands and yelled placidly "Fire, boys, fire! Come on up." . . . Dorm Fire Brigade led by those Steeves Bros. (Guy and John '11) aided and abetted by some Visiting Firemen of Volunteer Division, grabbed hall hose and washed all available walls . . . valuable advice given constantly by outside crowd augmented by outpouring of classes . . . someone remembering that fire burns better with draft suggested breaking windows . . . which was done efficiently by interested parties . . . lots of smoke . . . to escape flame and water furniture was thrown through windows . . . and well smashed on ground . . . lots of smoke . . . M. Smalley lost in it . . . Village Fire Dept. arrived in Fayerweather quadrangle in full regimentals . . . and out of wind . . . after an intriguing dress rehearsal they entered dorm to find Steeves at al had walls thoroughly washed with exception of one picture and two curtains (oversightcorrected immediately), floors awash (including those above and below) and situation being enjoyed . . . excited members of V. (Village, not Visiting) F. D. chopped up floor amid prolonged cheering from outside ... to capably soak Room 13 (the one directly below) occupied by "Heinie" Reed 'lO and L. C. Atkins 'll . . . hole then knocked in brick wall . . . no one could find fire, so it was voted inconclave that it must be out . . . MisterSmalley found . . . good time had by all. , . student body well solicited for fire insurance policies during next month.
"Cheer Up, Mary!" brought back from New York by that famous songbird Harry McDevitt '07, and "Hanoverized" with assistance of Pat Hathaway '07, and "Skinny" Rogers '09, continued to sweep Campus like wildfire . . . the Old Howard in Boston which has served "peerading" Dartmouth students long and well over manydecades took it on the chin for thirty daysrecently through order issued by MayorCurley . . . according to newspaperdomshe's dark for the first time in 87 years.
Congressman Samuel McCall '74, of Massachusetts, in speaking of current depression before Calumet Club at Winchester said present financial stringency was caused mainly through the people hoarding their money instead of depositing it in banks and allowing it to get into circulation ... he scouted the idea of a twenty-year cycle of depression and prosperity, and said that the present depression was merely a flurry which would be righted in a short time to be followed by a prosperity greater than ever before. His remarks caused considerable surprise among prominent bankers present . . .
