AFTER THE opening of College, September 23, 1909 which is just about a quarter of a century ago the College began to get together. First tangible evidence was a mass meeting in Commons when Coach Lillard, Manager Blake '10, Clarence McDavitt '00, Irving French '01, Captain Tobin '10, and graduate secretary, Dick Lane '07, spoke. Dartmouth trimmed Mass. Aggies, Vermont, Bowdoin, Williams, Amherst and Holy Cross in succession.
Dean Chuch Emerson issued proclamation "Any student wearing any form of masquerade to Chapel is guilty of sacrilege in a house of worship. Similar garb worn to a lecture or recitation is an undignified mark of ill breeding. Offenses of this kind hereafter will, if necessary, be made a subject of discipline." Secretary E. M. Hopkins '01 met the College to explain the program of inauguration of Ernest Fox Nichols as 10th President of Dartmouth, and the laying of the Corner Stone of the new Gym. Men in Mass. and Richardson Halls to vacate Wed. to Fri. for invited guests.
The Interclass meet was won by 1910, Nate Sherman taking five firsts. Jake Enright 2nd in high jump, 5', 9"; Nardini 2nd in 100 yd. dash; Pete Seidler '13 won the hammer throw, 113', 81/2"; and 1913 with Nardini, Seidler, Riley and Winship cleaned up 1912 in the relay.
One half "college dues" (tuition) was $62.50; dinners in Commons 25c. (Commons' mileage books $5.00); The Dartmouth, published Tues. and Fri., $1.00 a year; eating clubs $3.50 a week except Ed (Drill's at $5.00 and extra good chow.
The whole college saw the football team off at 6 A.M. for the Princeton tie 6 to 6. Harvard 12, Dartmouth 3, but the team saw "The Rose of Algeria" from boxes at the Majestic. The Freshmen, with Barends, Moose Harris and Morey starring, beat the Sophs. 6 to 0. Smith, Lewis and Remsen shone for 1912. Tuck School won from Thayer 5 to 0, Jack Marks elected captain and Head Coach W. Huston Lillard resigned. During this excitement, Jake Bond discovered a fire in Culver, and the fire department just didn't wreck the building.
Football 1913 numerals awarded Bennett, Scarry, Johnson, Harris, Baker, Edwards, Ashton, Boyle, Barends, Dudley, Capt. Morey, Fitzpatrick, Healy, Agnew, Reed, Orton and Piatt.
