The Dartmouth freshman eleven, now under the direction of Sidney C. Hazelton '09, has defeated Clark School, 13 to 0, and Roxbury School, 2 to 0, in its only two contests to date. Following the opening mob scene, in which some 150 candidates reported to Chase Field, Coach Hazelton has boiled his squad down to about four teams. He is being assisted this fall by Bill Hoffman '33, line coach, "Tiny" Marsans '27 and "Chick" Evans, who also coaches freshman basketball.
The yearling gridmen are captained this year by Bernard R. Alex, of Greenfield, Mass. Alex, who plays halfback, was a three-sport star at Worcester Academy, leading the football team there and winning letters in baseball and basketball. The remainder of the first backfield includes Robert E. Archibald of San Gabriel, Calif. (Alhambra); John H. Heil of Rocky River, Ohio (Rocky River High School); and John W. Armour of Oak Park, Ill. (Oak Park High School).
First-string ends are Lawrence C. Hull of Brooklyn, N. Y. (Brooklyn Poly Prep) and Fred W. Seaver of Leominster, Mass. (Worcester Academy). The tackles are Frank W. Cannell of Arlington, Mass. (Exeter) and Edward K. White of Belmont, Mass. (Belmont High School); the guards, Robert N. Bott of Arlington, Mass. (Exeter) and Roy D. Duckworth of White Plains, N. Y. (Choate); and the center, Hermon Holt of Newton Center, Mass. (Tabor).
Other prominent backs include Fred Hollingworth of Richmond Heights, Mo. (Maplewood High School); Warren C. King of Binghamton, N. Y. (Peddie); Parran Dawkins of Wayne, Pa. (Radnor High School); and Vining A. Sherman of Plymouth, Mass. (Middleboro).
Frank Cannell, the freshman tackle, is a nephew of Jack Cannell, former Dartmouth football coach.
