The life savings of an humble Hanovertailor were left to the faculty of DartmouthCollege at the death late in October ofChristian Smith, whose small shop on MainStreet had been known to a host of students, professors and townspeople duringthe past decade. Smith, who came to thiscountry from Germany about 50 years ago, passed over a son and daughter to leave hisentire fortune of about $9,000 to the College. This sum will be set up as the Christian Smith Fund, the income of which is tobe used for the benefit of the faculty ofDartmouth College as the trustees of theCollege may direct. The fund is the first ofits kind at Dartmouth.

Smith loved to gather with students inthe evening and relate over a stein of beerthe saga of his travels, which had takenhim throughout the world. He was familiarly known as "Charlie" and "Your Excellency," and took delight in assuming thediplomatic formality which the latter nickname required. Mr. Smith settled in Hanover about ten years ago, and after workingin the shops of Campion and Stonehouse, set up a small establishment of his own. Hewas known as an expert overcoat maker.
