This month's cover illustration is from a photograph of Ledyard Bridge made last month by Ralph W. Brown of Hanover. Mr. Brown, who uses a Graflex camera, f 2.5 lens, may have the distinction of having taken the last picture of the old bridge before the project of replacing it with a new one got under way. Work has begun on the construction of a temporary bridge and preparations are being made for tearing down the historic structure over the Connecticut that has been a landmark for more than 100 years.

When the project of a new bridge was first announced, a year ago, the State Highway Department was requested to plan a bridge which would retain the general lines and appearance of the old one. Commissioner F. E. Everett was in complete sympathy with the sentimental reasons that prompted this request. Engineers studied the problem but there was no way of using the historic superstructure on a modern base of concrete and steel, as some had hoped, without prohibitive expense.
