Some months ago, when PAB SAMPLE won an award at an exhibition of the Natonal Academy, we thought we were recording the Big News of Twenty's year. The luster of Pab's accomplishment is in no way dimmed by the new honor which has been accorded another classmate—this time in the field of education.

Doubtless the number of institutions of higher learning headed by Dartmouth men could be counted on the fingers of two hands. Now is added to this small and distinguished group the name of one of our own classmates, JOE BREWER. Almost simultaneously from several different sources came reports of Joe's election to the Presidency of Olivet College, Olivet, Mich. In the educational world the name Olivet means far more than it does to the average citizen. The college was founded ninety years ago by one of the founders of Oberlin College and during its long and useful life has won recognition as one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the country. It is co-educational and today has an enrollment of about 250 students. Its physical plant is in excellent shape, and all commentators agree that Joe has an exceptionally fine opportunity to work out his educational plans. Perhaps some idea of the nature of these plans may be gathered from Joe's own words: "It should be the function of the college to provide for those capable of profiting by it, an opportunity toacquire that body of knowledge which constitutes the minimum furnishings of thecivilized mind, the broad basis of cultureon which more specific knowledges andtechnics must rest and from which theyderive their significance."

All classmates know that Joe received his master's degree at Oxford, and that after four years as private secretary to the late J. St. Loe Strachey, editor of the London Spectator, he returned to New York to enter the publishing business. At the time of its sale to Harcourt, Brace, and Company a year ago, he was president of the firm of Brewer, Warren, and Putnam.

All who know Joe recognized his intellectual capacities and his administrative abilities. They will congratulate Olivet on its choice and will look forward to a highly successful administration.
