Dartmouth's 1934 football coachingstaff was completed on March 1 withthe announcement that Dr. Joseph C.Donchess, former coach and AilAmerican end at Pittsburgh, would bethe Green end coach under Earl Blaik.The selection of Donchess balancesDartmouth's new staff between Armyand Pittsburgh, Blaik and Ellingerhaving served at West Point, and Gustafson and Donchess having both received their experience under JockSutherland at the Panther institution.
Donchess, who was connected withthe New England Deaconess Hospitalin Boston, is continuing his trainingin pathology and surgery through theDartmouth Medical School and theMary Hitchcock Memorial Hospitalin Hanover. He received his M.D. degree at the Pittsburgh Medical Schoolin 1932, and before going to Bostonwas connected with the Mercy Hospitalin Pittsburgh.
Twenty-eight years old, Donchessentered the University of Pittsburgh in1926, and while there distinguishedhimself as a freshman and varsity end,winning Ail-American recognition inthe fall of 1929. After receiving his B.S.degree in 1930, he remained at Pittsburgh to coach the ends under JockSutherland and study medicine. Although a comparative newcomer at thecoaching game, he has been recognizedas one of the best end coaches in thecountry.
