Further moves in Dartmouth's newfootball deal were made on March 28with the announcement that "Pat"Holbrook '20, freshman coach for thepast five years, will be junior varsitycoach next fall, and that Sid Hazelton'op, varsity backfield coach under JackCannell, will return to the post offreshman coach. At the same time itwas announced that Bill Hoffman,varsity captain two years ago, will continue as freshman line coach. All selections were made by Earl Blaik,Dartmouth's new head coach.
The appointment of a junior varsitycoach is a new step for Dartmouthfootball. Under the Blaik system, asquad of between 35 and 40 men willcomprise the varsity, and the remaining candidates will make up a juniorvarsity squad from which promotionsto the top group will be made fromtime to time.
"Pat" Holbrook, Dartmouth's newjunior varsity leader, has had a brilliant record as freshman coach during the past five years. His yearlingteams were undefeated during the firstthree seasons of his regime, andthroughout the whole five-year periodthey compiled a record of 22 victories,3 ties, and only 5 defeats. Before becoming head freshman coach, Holbrook was assistant to Sid Hazeltonfrom 1925 through 1928. As an undergraduate he starred at halfback on theBig Green elevens of 1917, 1919, and1920.
Sid Hazelton, who returns to thepost of head freshman coach after fiveyears as varsity backfield assistant, directed the first-year gridmen from1920 to 1928 before moving up to thevarsity staff as Jack Cannell's aide.During the past 14 years, from 1920on, he has also coached the varsityand freshman swimming teams andthe freshman baseball team.
