Janssen'21 Honored
June 1934

Werner Janssen '2l, who scored a musical triumph abroad during the past year with his conducting of the Helsingfors Municipal Orchestra in the music of Jan Sibelius, has been announced as one of the seven guest conductors of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for the coming season. The invitation to Janssen sets a new precedent in American music, for he becomes the first native-born American accorded the honor of conducting the Philharmonic.

Following his winning of the Prix de Rome, Janssen made his reputation as a brilliant conductor in a series of European concerts, his interpretation of Sibelius at Helsingfors marking the climax of his brilliant career. His symphonic work, "New Year's Eve in New York" has been played abroad and by all the major orchestras of this country.

"If you weren't resigning your positionas Secretary of the Dartmouth Club of NewYork City you would never get this covetedaward! The Committee of judges has hadyou in mind for several years. But .we wereafraid that the award you would look uponas the crowning climax of a period of Herculean service to the College and forthwith withdraw from your job. This you aredoing this year, much to our regret, for itis of great importance that good clubsecretaries be continued in office just aslong as they are willing to serve (grantedreasonably good behavior!). There is someconsolation in the fact that your successorshows much promise and that you willalways be ready to assist him. The problemof tying together some three thousandalumni in a great city with any sort ofcommon bond is one that you have workedon steadily, practically daily, for severalyears. You have made real progress, withthe support and cooperation of other officers of the New York Club. You have a100% record of club notes in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE during the past year. Dartmouthhas some mighty fine club secretaries butnone any better than Jim Landauer.

In the long hours of leisure that followretirement from a Dartmouth secretaryship you will find time to read up on thehistory of the College."
