THIS YEAR SEES the passing from Parkhurst Hall of that Dartmouth man who has served the College in an official capacity for more than thirty years—Dean Laycock. It is with love and respect that the undergraduates of the College pay honor to Dean Laycock as he resigns from active service, and with the lasting memory of former occasions that they hope that he will occasionally return to them on the Webster rostrum when the College is celebrating annual Dartmouth Night or a pre-Yale game rally.
As this appears, balmy June days at Dartmouth find seniors in the midst of their comprehensives, while other undergraduates are busy preparing for the finals which begin in a few days. It's a tough time in Hanover, with the long day's grind interrupted only by occasional movies and the distracting celebrations of seniors who have just finished their last exam.
There seem this year to be more students than ever who like to take their studying con el sol. On fraternity balconies, dormitory laWns, everywhere, one sees semi-nude figures basking under the warm sun, while, with sunglass protection, notes are reviewed for examinations. This tanning studying is sometimes done in rather unsuspected places. We were coming out of the Tower Room of the Library the other day and going into one of the seminar rooms when we heard some feminine giggling in the corridor. Two young guests, investigation showed, were being shown the Library by their escort, and had taken a look through one of the seminar doors (no doubt to see what Dartmouth men looked like when studying). It must have been a surprise to them, for they saw three practically nude, hairy-chested individuals complacently settled in the walnut chairs studying in the full light of the sun coming through the open west window.
Dean of the College for 21 Years Dean Laycock '96 will celebrate Commencement with the class of 1934 as the last one of his long career as Dartmouth teacher and administrator. He retires from active service this year.
