November 1935

Dartmouth's freshman class of 655 men has the widest geographic distribution of any entering class in recent years, coming from 38 states, the District of Columbia" and seven foreign nations, it is disclosed in the recent report of Robert C. Strong '24, dean of freshmen and director of admissions. Although below last year's totals, Massachusetts and New York continue to lead by a wide margin in the number of men sent to Dartmouth, the Bay State contributing 142 and New York 133. Striking gains have been registered this year by California, Washington and Minnesota, and the foreign group of 12 men is unusually large.

Three more states are represented in this year's freshman class than in last year's, while five new foreign lands have been added in China, England, Switzerland, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Actually, six states not on last year's list are represented this year, Alabama leading with three men, and Arkansas, Idaho, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wyoming contributing one each. The three states represented last year and not this year are South Carolina, Utah and West Virginia.

Freshmen from Massachusetts total 142 this fall in contrast to 176 last year. New York, with 133 representatives, is 13 below last year's figure, while third-place New Jersey, with 51 men, is 26 below last fall's total. Connecticut continues to hold fourth place, while New Hampshire has advanced to a fifth-place tie with Illinois. The State of Washington's jump from one to six representatives is the most striking gain, while California's advance from 7 to 13 and Minnesota's from 11 to 19 are also outstanding. Among the New England states, Vermont shows a marked increase from 5 to 12, while New Hampshire and Maine' have the same totals as last year, with 43 and 7, respectively.

The distribution by states follows:

Massachusetts New York New Jersey Connecticut Illinois New Hampshire Pennsylvania Ohio Minnesota California Vermont Michigan District of Columbia Maine Rhode Island Washington Wisconsin Nebraska Oklahoma

Statistics on sectional distribution show that the New England states continue to send the most freshmen to Dartmouth, with second honors going to the Middle Atlantic district and third honors to the Central States. While the top three sections show a decline in their totals, marked gains have been registered by the Southern, Pacific and Rocky Mountain regions, which hold fourth, fifth and sixth places, respectively.

Sectional totals are as follows:
