The Green soccer team opened its 1935 season on October 5 by holding a favored Springfield eleven to a 2-2 tie in an overtime contest, and followed this up on the following Saturday with a decisive 3-1 victory over Amherst. The tie game with Springfield was costly to Tommy Dent, however, for Rod Harloe, junior star at the outside right position, dislocated his elbow and was lost for the season.

Ross Woodbridge, brother of Paul Woodbridge '29, former soccer captain for the Green, scored one of Dartmouth's goals against Springfield on a penalty kick, and Captain Gidney netted the second one shortly after as the Indians unleashed a strong attack. Springfield scored in the second and fourth quarters to even the score, and an overtime period failed to break the deadlock. Young and Davidson starred defensively against the Springfielders, who are reputed to have the best team in their long history of strong soccer clubs.

In the Amherst game, Dartmouth trailed at the close of the first quarter, but scored twice in the second and once in the third to sew up the contest. The Green forward wall of Captain Gidney, Woodbridge, Curtis, Devlin and Mayo worked well as a unit, with Devlin and Curtis scoring the first two goals, and Marsh Land of the halfback line contributing the third tally. The two opening games on the Green schedule indicated that Tommy Dent's current team will be a potent factor in the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League this fall.
