FRANCIS LANE CHILDS '06, professor of English, wrote the dedication hymn sung by the congregation at the dedicatory exercises of the new White Church, November 10. He is one of the ranking members of the faculty, for his first connection with the College dates back to 1909. As secretary of the class of 1906, he is a member of the Dartmouth Secretaries Association and is this year serving as president of the Association.
The dedication hymn, of which Professor Childs is the author, was sung to the DukeStreet tune. The words follow:
This house of worship we have builtTo Thee, dear Lord, we dedicate,And for all time its every useUnto Thy service consecrate.
As in the house our fathers wroughtOn yonder green, Thou didst revealThyself in former days, so hereLet us Thy living presence feel.
In sermon preached, in lesson read,Speak Thou to us in Thine own way;Accept our gifts of hymn and song;Be near us while we humbly pray.
When down the long road of the yearsWe pass, and leave our tasks to thoseWho follow, still beneath this roofThy loving care to them disclose.
Let all who come within these walls,From sin and doubt to seek release,Go forth with faith and strength renewed,Enveloped in Thy lasting peace.
