"Jacobites" Organize
February 1935

Formal organization of "The Jacobites," a group of present and former staff members of Jack-o-Lantern, was effected on January 6 at a dinner at the Dartmouth Club of New York City. Theodor S. Geisel '25, better known as Dr. Seuss, was elected president of the new organization, and Abner Epstein '31, who draws under the name of Abner Dean, was named vice-president. Other members of the Council include Clifford Orr '22, John Keller '32, Stanley H. Silverman '34, and Richard M. Spong '36.

The formation of "The Jacobites" was sponsored by the 1935 Directorate of Jack-o-Lantern for the purpose of holding an annual dinner and of creating a permanent organization to which undergraduate editors may turn at any time for advice or assistance. The constitution of the club declares that membership for the present is open to all alumni of the magazine who care to join. In the future, membership will be limited to staff members nominated in their senior year by the editors and approved by the club officers. The editor-inchief of Jack-o-Lantern automatically becomes a member of "The Jacobites" and, during his term of office, acts as a member of the Council. No dues will be charged by the organization.

J. H. Spingarn '35, who was chairman of arrangements for the dinner, will be in charge of organizing "The Jacobites" until the Council takes office in March. The name "Jacobites" appeared on the masthead of the magazine for a number of years.

Other alumni at the dinner were Dean Chamberlin '26, Charles K. O'Neill '31, R. W. Holbrook '31, Joseph Boldt '33, and Gay Milius '33. Corey Ford and Hugh Troy also attended and were elected to honorary membership.
