John McCrillis, who had been clerk of courts for Sullivan county, N. H., for a period of over forty-eight years, resigned the position January 10, 1935.

He was appointed to the clerkship March 6, 1886, and a short time afterwards was admitted to the bar, although he never engaged in the general practice of his profession. His term of service was longer than that of any other clerk of courts in the history of the state, and probably exceeded that of any other county official. When he was appointed clerk, the printed court docket contained 78 cases, while the latest one has 278 cases. He is succeeded in the position by his son, John W. McCrillis, Dartmouth 'l9.

The local newspaper, the Argus-Champion, says of him:

"His service has been marked by a devotion and ability which have made hisclerkship a model of efficiency in the estimation of the scores of judges who haveheld court in Sullivan county during thepast half century. At the same time hiscourtesy and kindness towards members ofthe bar and the general public have beenunfailing.

"The record of Hon. John McCrillis isremarkable, not only in the time coveredbut in the splendid character of his workas an official.

"He has found time outside his courtduties to be a constructive force in Newport's civic and business affairs for theperiod of nearly a half century, and it isthe hope of all our citizens that he willcontinue to serve the community in various interests for many years to come."
