AFTER A WOBBLY early-season start, the Dartmouth basketball team came roaring down the home stretch to finish a highly respectable third in the final standings of the Eastern Intercollegiate League. Seven victories and five defeats were the lot of the Green five. Captain Al Bonniwell set a new league scoring record with 142 points in twelve games, and the Indians indirectly settled the championship by handing Columbia a surprise defeat at Hanover on February 23 and thus enabling Pennsylvania to tie the Lions and eventually win the play-off. After downing Columbia, 36-31, the Green five went on to defeat Harvard, 37-24, and end its season with a 43-28 decision over Cornell.
Dartmouth's stubborn defensive power stood the team in good stead in the Columbia encounter, and while the Lions were resorting to long shots, the Indians were working their way under the basket with the best passing attack they displayed all season. Dolly Stark's club played alert basketball, while Columbia seemed a trifle tired from its road trip.
The Blue team rushed into a 6-point lead before field goals by Bonniwell, Davis and Hubbell and a foul by McKernan gave the Green a 7-6 advantage. The score then mounted to 13-13, but Toan, Bonniwell and Davis broke through the Columbia defense to give Dartmouth a 23-15 lead as the half ended. The Lions came back with a rush after the rest period and soon forged ahead, 27-26. Coach Stark rushed Cleaveland and Parachini into action at that point, and five points by the former helped clinch Dartmouth's victory. Jack Davis took scoring honors with 12 points, but 10 points enabled Captain Bonniwell to make a sizeable addition to his remarkable league total.
HARVARD GAME SLOW
The Harvard contest in the Alumni Gymnasium one week later was slow in comparison with the Columbia game, and after a bid early in the opening period the Crimson five, handicapped by the loss of three of its star players, was never in the running. The lead jockeyed back and forth to 8-all at the start of hostilities, but a sustained attack by Bonniwell, Hubbell and Davis gave Dartmouth a 17-12 lead at halftime. Harvard pulled up to 17-14 at the start of the second period, but the Indians ran up 10 straight points before the Crimson tallied again, and three more baskets by Bonniwell enabled the Green five to coast to victory. The Dartmouth captain added 11 points to his scoring total, while Davis with 8 and Hubbell with 7 followed in that order.
The final game of the season saw Dolly Stark's club put on another well-rounded attack to down Cornell, 43-28, on the Alumni Gymnasium court. Dartmouth ran up a g-point lead before the Ithacans tallied and rolled merrily along for a 24-16 advantage at half-time. Captain Bonniwell, Davis and Hubbell continued their dealy shooting in the second session, and were bolstered by McKernan and Phil Conti, the sophomore football star who was making his league debut.
The evening was filled with sentiment, with farewell ovations tendered to Captain Bonniwell, Davis, Hubbell and Sid Krivitsky. As Dartmouth's great leader left the floor three minutes before the end of the game, the crowd rose to its feet with a terrific din that halted play for several minutes. Bonniwell finished his Dartmouth court career with 14 points to assure him a new league record in point-gathering.
At the close of the season, John R. McKernan '36, center from Barre, Vt., was elected to lead the Green basketball team next season. Letters were awarded by the Athletic Council to Captain Albert E. Bonniwell '35, Philadelphia; John A. Davis '35, Bloomfield, N. J.; Ferguson W. Hubbell '35, Bridgeport, Conn.; Sydney Krivitsky '35, Brookline, Mass.; Paul S. Cleaveland '36, Lancaster, N.
