Arthur Chase spent his first winter of retirement in New Haven. In April, he journeyed to New Mexico to visit his two sons. Returning at the end of June, he went to Branford Point, Conn., which has been his summer home for many years. He plans to be in New Haven again this coming winter "E. B." Davis wrote, late in July, that he was "taking a good restin a quiet bit of old picturesque FrenchCanada, on a bluff, hanging high above theSt. Lawrence, down the river from Quebec." .... On August 20, "Sully" wrote from Abano Terme (Padova), a small village in northeastern Italy, between Venice and Padua, where he and Mrs. Sullivan were resting for a few days. With three of their children, they had crossed the Atlantic on the Manhattan, which carried also the hundreds of energetic and enthusiastic youths, headed for the Olympic contests in Berlin. The family had scattered itself about Europe, but all were to meet in Havre, September 10, to sail back home On September 2, the Secretary heard that Wellman was in a hospital in Boston. Two hours later the two were chatting pleasantly. Early in August, both Mr. and Mrs. Wellman came to Boston for observation and study of obscure symptoms. Mrs. Wellman was greatly relieved and reassured and went home after a few days, but "Squire" was put to bed to stay "some while." When seen, he had been through the period of discomfort and weakness, was his cheerful self again and seemed to be well on the way to complete recovery About mid-July, Fred Wheat gave the Secretary a pleasant surprise by appearing in person. He was spending several weeks in Marblehead and was planning to go to Hanover for a few days, to see the old town under more favorable conditions than are possible when it is crowded with throngs of graduating seniors and their friends, not to mention the hundreds of alumni, gathered for reunions.
