A drive for $300,000 to provide necessary expansion of the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover will be inaugurated on October 1 after months of careful preparation and organization for soliciting funds. Under the pressure of greatly increased demands for service from an area of more than 2,000 square miles in New Hampshire and Vermont, the Hospital will undertake to raise before November the funds needed for four new units.
The proposed expansion of the Hospital includes a hospital unit with operating and laboratory facilities; additions to the present building, providing 20 additional ward beds; a nurses' home unit to provide living quarters for 48 nurses, half of whom will be additions to the nursing staff and the rest transferred from overcrowded quarters; and a new heating plant and laundry unit.
The expansion program will increase the total number of beds from 100 to 134, and the bassinets from 14 to 17, making it possible for the Hospital to accommodate 151 persons. In recent years, 114 beds and bassinets have had to be crowded into space planned for 65.
