The son of the late Hon. John W. Gordon,—John A. Gordon 1919—is following in the footsteps of his father, having just been elected to represent the city of Barre in the House of Representatives in the coming General Assembly of Vermont. He was elected on the Democratic ticket, whereas his father was always a prominent, staunch but perhaps liberal, Republican.
Alfred W. Robertson, non-graduate, 1911, son of Samuel W. Robertson, '83 has just been re-elected as city representative from Santa Barbara in the California legislature. He is a successful lawyer and very popular in his home city, having received a majority vote of both major political parties in the primary election.
The father is a retired educator, and was elected to the Santa Barbara school board before his retirement. Here is Prof. John K. Lord's estimate of him as an educator in New Hampshire before he removed to California, where he added to his laurels:
"The fact that he has commanded thesupport of the communities where he hastaught and also the confidence of his fellow teachers throughout the state, and isheld by them as one on whom they maysafely rely, is proof of ability as a teacherand school administrator of no commonorder."
Alfred E. Watson, who has always been opposed to the present primary election law as it now operates and who has always been a Republican, but, under existing statutes, had to file a nomination certificate as an Independent for town representative from Hartford, in the coming session of the Vermont General Assembly, was elected over the present Republican incumbent of the office, seeking a re-election, by a majority of 564 votes. His candidacy was indorsed by the Democrats and he was made the official candidate of their party.
His total vote was 1294, the largest ever cast for a political candidate in town, leading the highest vote on the national ticket by 259 votes and the highest vote on the state ticket by 26a votes.
He has previously been elected as town representative twice and state senator once, which ought to give him valuable experience.
