NOW that King Winter is about to reign again I thought it might be helpful if I suggested a few tested books on winter sports of various kinds. Inasmuch as interest in skiing is growing by leaps and bounds the majority in the list deals with this thrilling sport. Learn To Ski!, by Hermann Bautzmann. The Macmillan Company, 1936. Modern Ski Technique, by Otto Schniebs and J. W. McCrillis. 5th edition, The Stephen Daye Press, 1936. High Speed Skiing, by Peter Lunn. Stephen Daye Press, 1935. The Art of Skiing, by Charles N. Proctor and R. R. Stephens. Harcourt, Brace, Skis and Skiing, by Elon Jessup. E. P. Dutton & Co., 1929. The Complete Ski-Runner, by Arnold Lunn. Methuen, London, 1930. Modern Figure Skating, by T. D. Richardson. Methen, London, 1930. The Book of Winter Sports, by W. Dustin White. Houghton, Mifflin, 1925. Winter Sports, by Viscount Knebworth and others. (The Lonsdale Library.) Seeley, Service & Co., Ltd., London, 1930.
One can not learn skiing from a book, but after learning balance, and the accomplishment of being able to stand up on simple slopes, the enthusiast will find the above books helpful. The most widely used book around Hanover is undoubtedly the one written by Otto Schniebs and Mr. McCrillis. It was Otto, I believe, who made the immortal remark something to the ef- fect that "skiing is more than a sport, it is a way of life." Ski Heil! and good-luck to you.
