Judge Dana '71 Dies
February 1936

Judge William S. Dana, class secretary of 1871, died at his home in Woodstock, Vt„ on January 9 following a heart attack two days earlier. He had practiced law in Massachusetts and Vermont since 1878 and had been assistant judge of Windsor County court since 1922. Judge Dana, who celebrated his 85th birthday on New Year's Day, was the oldest living member of the Dartmouth Secretaries Association, and despite his age, religiously attended all the meetings of the Association. He graduated from Dartmouth as valedictorian of the Class of 1871, studied law at Woodstock and Clinton, Mass., and was admitted to the bar at Worcester, Mass., in 1878.

Judge Dana was the last survivor of three brothers who attended Dartmouth, made brilliant scholastic records, and became prominent alumni of the College. His brothers were Dr. Charles L. Dana '72, professor of medical studies, and John Cotton Dana '78, librarian in Denver, Springfield, and Newark.
