Miss Gladys Swarthout, charming youngmezzo-soprano of the Metropolitan OperaAssociation, came to Hanover on January14 for the second concert of the currentDartmouth College Concert Series, andcompletely captivated a huge audiencewhich occupied even a large part of theWebster Hall stage. The combination ofbeauty, charm and vocal brilliance provided an evening equalled only by that, four years ago, when Lily Pons sang atDartmouth. The last barrier between MissSwarthout and her audience was shatteredwhen the young American singer faced thestage-audience to repeat "The Janitor'sBoy," halted her song in confusion whenshe espied a red-haired student sitting directly in front of her, and then spunaround, her face buried in her hands, asking everyone's pardon. Miss Swarthout'sconcert had definite appeal for the hundreds of undergraduates present, and thecry of "More!" was heard again. It is reported that faculty members stamped theirfeet—an assertion, unfortunately, lackingdefinite proof.
