Fraternity Fire
March 1936

Fire believed to have started in a fuse box swept through the Alpha Sigma Phi house, on North Main Street, in the early morning hours of February 19, reducing the frame structure to a hollow shell. Fanned by a strong wind, the flames had gutted the second and third floors almost before the fire engines arrived.

The thirteen students who lived in the house were awakened by Harry Eisberg '36 of New York City, and all reached safety. A few suffered rope burns, received when they escaped from the upper stories. The residents of the house spent the night at Dick's House and were temporarily assigned vacant dormitory rooms by Dean Neidlinger the following day. The Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity may take over the old Beta Theta Pi house for the remainder of the year.
