THE SECOND WEEK in February marked quite a busy time for the Southern California Alumni since we had the latest football movies at our regular Tuesday luncheon, and then on Friday night about fifty of us gathered to celebrate Dartmouth Night and the rededication of Dartmouth Hall. Even though we are more than three thousand miles from Hanover we will always remember Dartmouth Hall looking down through the elms into the broad green campus, and may the memorable picture remain the same through many years to come.
Dartmouth Night is always a big occasion for us here on the West Coast as there are many of us who can't get to the weekly- luncheons very well; so Dartmouth Night is our big get-together to hash over old times, sing the old songs (and the new), and generally have a good time. The evening was a big success, being started with a fine dinner at the University Club, and interspersed with songs all through the evening until we were all too hoarse to sing. Of course we sang the new song, "The Wearers of the Green," ably abetted by Morgan Hobart '32 at the piano. Our president, Ashton Castle '24, said a few words about Dartmouth Night and the new Dartmouth Hall and introduced our several guests. From out of town we were glad to have Max Bonter '09 from the San Francisco Association, and also Al Kline '35 who is just back in this country on a trip around the world. Dr. Walter S. Adams '98, director of Mt. Wilson Observatory, took a night off from the stars to be with us, as did Royal B. Thayer '01, the date rancher from Coachella Valley. Ray Bennett '13 and Dave Bradley '03 told us all about how the California undergraduates at Dartmouth are getting along this year. Of course, most of the officers of the Association were there including Tubby Laton '09, Jim Moore '24, Bob Collins '29, John Lyman '28, and Win Smoyer '32, though we all missed seeing our genial hardworking secretary, Leon Rothschild '24, who has been in the hospital for the past two months suffering from a throat infection. We did telephone him just to let him in on some of the Dartmouth Night spirit. Many of the younger graduates were there. Fred Rinaldo '34 and Rudy Pacht '35 who are now at M. G. M., Mai Metcalf '32 of Firestone and Olympic fame, Jerry Fries '34 and Bob Sands '33. Nor should we forget some of our old standbys like Jim Norton '08, Vic Salinger '00, Bob Thieme '16, Walter Douglas '31, and Roland Foss '19. After hours of talking and singing we left with "Men of Dartmouth" ringing in our ears and we all eagerly await next years Dartmouth Night.
