The spring football squad enjoyed its first real scrimmage on Saturday, April 11, with more than 65 candidates taking part in either offensive or defensive work. Full-game scrimmages every Saturday from now on are the plan of Coach Blaik, who has been working up gradually from fundamentals . to the intricacies of forward-pass plays. The entire coaching staff is on hand, with Andy Gustafson looking after the backs, Harry Ellinger the linemen, Joe Donchess the ends, and Rollie Bevan everyone in general.
The veteran backs, Hollingworth, Whitaker, Christiansen, and Foley, stood out in the first spring scrimmage, while the freshman candidates, Clark, Magee, Pyrtek, Allen, Cotton, and Viens looked promising among the newcomers. Yearling line candidates include Dilkes, Schrage, and Taylor at tackle, and Mudge and Gibson at center. The first-year centers have seen plenty of service in the first line while Mutt Ray is out for baseball. Veterans form the nucleus of the line at present, with Captain Gordon Bennett and Dave Camerer at tackles, and John Williams and Bill Cole at guards. The end squad centers around Larry Hull, Merrill Davis, John Merrill, and Karl Siedensteucker.
Weather conditions have been a real handicap to Coach Blaik thus far, but general improvement still goes on.
