"At the end of this month the StandardTimes takes off its hat to George H. Trippbecause New Bedford owes Mr. Trippgratitude and praise for the quality of hisadministration as head of the New BedfordPublic Library for 35 years, a post fromwhich he retires with the end of this week.Second librarian in the history of the institution, he has been a worthy successor tothe revered Robert C. Ingraham, whosedeath created the vacancy into which hestepped from a 25-year career as an educator. Besides maintaining well-rounded collections in all standard departments, hehas made the library a rich source ofsoutheastern Massachusetts history andgenealogy, and known the world over forits material on whaling. Widely informed, genial, and witty, his personality has addeddistinction to the library among residentsof the community and in library circles ofthe state, and his work has laid a firmfoundation for its future."
