The number of German grammars on the market is legion. But the number of those suitable for use in college courses which aim to give a reading knowledge of German in the shortest possible time is not large, and this Introduction to College German is, therefore, a welcome addition.
The problem in the preparation of such an elementary grammar is not the presentation of new grammatical material, but the proper selection and description of the common facts of the language; the chief difficulty is in determining where the line lies between not enough and too much. The authors have shown good sense in the selection of material and in the order of presentation. The use of the book in a lithographed edition two years ago and in the beginning course at Dartmouth this year has shown that it is well adapted to the purpose for which it was designed' there is, in fact, every reason to believe that this grammar should be an outstanding success in its field. It has one desirable feature that has been incorporated here in a beginner's book for the first time, namely, a very interesting exposition of the differences in sentence rhythm or speech melody characteristic of the German and English languages.
