Coach Osborn Cowles' freshman football eleven started its season by losing out to a much superior Boston College '41 team. .... It was expected that the Eaglets would be too strong for the little Indians, but the 19-0 score was something of a shock to those who hoped Dartmouth was well equipped with frosh material this year. .... However, the team had a very short time to prepare for the slaughter, and the '41 eleven may yet encourage those who look ahead to 1938 sophomore replacements The starting line-up for the freshmen against B. C. was something of a eye-opener to the writer .... for after all the talk that Dartmouth gridsters were coming more and more from outside the New England states, the 1941 Dartmouth eleven bobs up with a strong greater-Boston line-up Are we bragging, us Boston lads? Just a little bit The left tackle, Bob Campbell, comes fro® Medford; the center, Ed Phelan, from Marblehead; the right guard, Dan Dacey, from Alston; the right tackle, Monty Winship, from Medford; and the right half, back, Paul Mahoney, from Cambridge.
But in all fairness to the rest of the country, there are three good gridsters from Minnesota (Minneapolis papers please copy). They are: fullback Don Norton, halfback Bob Kreiger, and left end Paul Kelley, no relation to Larry. Then, too, Jim Bauman from Waite High in Toledo, Ohio, is a fine prospect, as is Lou Young Jr. from Narberth, Pa. Right end Charles Soule from Jamestown, R. 1., gives that state a strong representation.
On the soccer field, Coach Dent's promising eleven lost the first game of the season to Springfield by the score of 3-1. In the next contest of the year and the second straight New England Intercollegiate League tilt, Dartmouth was tied by Williams, l-x, and two days later lost to Mass. State's booters 2-1. Illnesses at both of the fullback posts have hampered the Indians considerably Coach Harry Hillman's varsity cross-country team walloped Amherst in its first start with Captain Stew Whitman, Die Hawkes and Hal Wonson finishing in a three-way tie for first place.
