New End Coach
February 1937

Early in January, William H. Mc- Carter '19, director of athletics, announced the resignation of Joe Donchess as end coach on the varsity football staff and the appointment of Ed Hirshberg of Pittsburgh to fill his post. Donchess, who came to Hanover with Earl Blaik three years ago, will transfer to Gary, Indiana, to take up his duties as assistant surgeon in the United States Steel Corporation's hospital there.

Hirshberg, first choice of Donchess to carry on the development of the Big Green ends, was captain of the Pittsburgh eleven in 1931. After graduation he served two seasons as assistant coach at St. Thomas College in Scranton, Pa., and then returned to Pittsburgh as end coach in 1933. He will come to Hanover with a remarkable record both as a player and as a teacher of defensive play, and will fit smoothly into the Blaik system. Prominent among his squad next fall will be Captain Merrill Davis, Joe Pyrtek, and Larry Hull, all lettermen from the past or the 1935 season.
