The Proctors of Dartmouth, father and son, have made an impressive contribution to the development of American skiing. The senior by advice, suggestion, and an immense amount of work behind the scenes, the junior by competing, instructing, writing and providing good equipment. This book by "young Charlie" was first issued in 1933. The new edition has been wholly rewritten. It covers all phases of the sport except jumping, and it is sound and lucid. There are a lot of superb scenic pictures, and a series of instruction pictures taken from movie films of experts in process of demonstration. These have been criticised because they are so small. But on close examination the details are all there. It was evidently necessary to choose between providing many small pictures showing the complete process of a turn, or a few large ones showing it at a few points only. This is probably, all things considered, the best American book on the subject.
