There were also several outstanding sports happenings of the month which were worthy of leading honors in themselves: First, Johnny Donovan's two early season track wins in the 45-yard high hurdles in the Prout Games on January 30th and at the B. A. A. games on February Johnny twice defeated Sam Allen to win his specialty, and in the Prout games tied the world's record for the event in sseconds. His rival Allen defeated him in the 60-yard highs at the Millrose Games and scored a new world's record in the 45-yard highs in a semi-final heat of the •A.A., only to lose out to Donavan in a photo-finish. The rivalry between these men has been one of the highlights of an unprecedented indoor season in the East.

Captain Norm Anderson also turned in 0:16 the month's leading individual sPorts showings by going to the finals of 1 e Eastern Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis cumpionship over Carnival week-end. 1 °rm left Hanover for New York without Mentioning a word about his entrance into le tournament and his fellow mates first wh' °' unexpected bid for the title en he began his march to the top and e finals. Each day saw the experts count °rm out before the match, but even champion George Dunn of Pennsylvania found him a stubborn opponent in the finals with the score by sets, 9-7, 6-4, 10-8, speaking for itself.

Individual record-breaking performances and 400-yard and medley relay records have featured a fair season in Spaulding Pool for the natators. Ed White '385 in the breast stroke, Bud Stein '38 in the 50- yard freestyle, the medley relay team of Dick Gilbert '38, Clark Fletcher '38, and White, and the 400-yard relay team of Ernie Fetske '39, Bob Cushman '39, Walt Graf 37 and Wayne Shrodes '39 figured in the new records. As a team the Hazeltonmen have lost to Yale, Harvard and Brown and have won over Springfield. The Brown meet was close, 39-36, and the Springfield victory one-sided for the Big Green, which was exactly what happened in the Yale and Harvard meets, only the other way around, unfortunately.

Off-season sports at the present show Coach "Lord Jeffrey" Tesreau working his pitchers daily in the gym cage and Trainer Rollie Bevan keeping his gridsters in shape with his second annual body- building classes which had such obvious good results for last fall's eleven. Jeff has 15 twirlers and catchers of various abilities and Rollie has 40-odd hopefuls.

And finally, the gym team lost to Princeton 41-13 in their only meet of the winter to date; the freshman basketball team goes into the home stretch with one defeat on the record, Montpelier Seminary, 19-15; and the freshman hockey sextet continues to show improvement topped by an 8-1 victory over Nichols Junior College, just to mention a few of the things that have been happening on the Dartmouth sports front.
