HERB GILL RESIGNS COACHING POST; BASKETBALL TEAM SHOWSSTEADY PROGRESS; SKIERS KEEP CARNIVAL CROWN
AFTER THREE seasons as coach of the Dartmouth varsity and freshman hockey and tennis squads, Coach Herb Gill tendered his resignation on the evening of February 10th to the D. C. A. C.
Director of Athletics William H. McCarter in making the announcement of Coach Gill's resignation stated that "the D. C. A. C. has accepted the resignation of Herbert B. Gill, hockey and tennis coach, to take effect at the end of the college year. Mr. Gill is resigning due to his dissatisfaction with conditions at Dartmouth."
On the following day Coach Gill in the Vox Populi columns of The Dartmouth publicly explained in greater detail the reasons for his sudden decision, the main body of which read: " (1) Certain members of the squad complained originally that I had driven the squad to such a degree as to effect, materially, their play in general. (2) I dropped three or four offending players for such reasons as complete and absolute breaking of training rules, rank in- subordination, etc. I took those players back soon after, reinstating them com- pletely, and as after events proved, I made a serious error of judgment. (3) Finally, the players, still anxious to place the blame on their coach, brought out direct statements concerning the decided feeling which existed among them to the effect that my tactics and general system of coaching was wrong in every respect
I maintain here that much of the 'driving' of players was necessary because of four fundamentals which I used, and must of necessity be used, by all teams, namely, checking back, covering, passing, constant shooting."
