With more cohesive and better integrated majors as an objective, the English Department during the past month has announced drastic revision in the major requirements for the Class of 1939 and succeeding classes. Starting next fall, the student majoring in English will choose one of the following fields of concentration: Drama, Fiction, American Literature, English Classics, and Modern Literature.
The Drama major will embrace a thorough study of Shakespeare; a survey of drama from the beginnings to the present time, with special attention to recent American drama; and some acquaintance with the technique of play production. The Fiction major will deal with a survey of English and American fiction from their inception to the present time and will include a brief study of Chaucer and Shakespeare.
Those concentrating on American Literature will study all forms of writing by Americans and their closer English influences, besides making some acquaintance with Shakespeare. The English Classics field will present a survey of English Literature from Chaucer to the early 19th century in all forms. The major is recommended to all men contemplating teaching or specializing in poetry. For each of these fields there will be from six to eight required courses and from two to four electives.
