The Guernsey Center Moore Foundation lectures for 1937 were delivered at Dartmouth by Dr. Heinrich Bruening, former chancellor of Germany, on March 16-19. The general subject of the four afternoon lectures was "The Antagonism Between Totalitarian and Democratic Principles." In successive talks before large audiences in Dartmouth Hall, Dr. Bruening discussed the essence of democracy in its different forms, attempts to reestablish authority in democracy, main attacks of totalitarian ideology against democracy, and the relation of the totalitarian state to the churches and natural law. Throughout he related his own personal experiences at the helm of the German nation from 1930 to 1932, just prior to the rise of the Hitler regime.
The lectures formed the 16th annual series since the Guernsey Center Moore Foundation was started in 1920. They have been made possible through the gift of H. L. Moore '77, former trustee of the College, in memory of his son, Guernsey Center Moore '04, who died while an undergraduate.
