Dartmouth's 1937 Alumni Fund campaign officially got under way on April 17 with the mailing of the Fund Committee's initial pamphlet, A Message from TwoPresidents, to more than 17,000 alumni. Prior to this, the stage had been set with the organization of class agents in March and with the distribution of the 1936 Fund Report early in April.

Although the 1937 Fund campaign will again be conducted on the "no quota" basis which has proved successful during the past four years, a goal of 8,000 contributors and $110,000 in contributions has been set by the Fund Committee of the Alumni Council. Last year the Fund achieved an all-time record for number of contributors, receiving $94,654.78 from 7,543 alumni of the College. This 1936 figure marked a gain of 11.73 Per cent over the previous year, and the Committee expects the 1937 results to continue this progress. Early returns of $11,000 by April 20 had already shown an encouraging improvement over last year.

The Fund Committee's initial appeal, AMessage from Two Presidents, contains a statement from President Hopkins and an excerpt from an address made by President Angell of Yale at the Harvard Tercentenary celebration. President Hopkins describes the Alumni Fund as "the greatest single agency by which the College can be assured against retrogression," and points out that the Fund appeal, formerly made on the basis of continued progress by the College, must now be made on the basis of forestalling the retrogression which is likely to come about through the shrinkage of gifts and income from endowed funds. In similar vein, President Angell speaks of "the unavoidable repercussions upon endowed education which inevitably flow from certain types of taxations now increasingly in vogue."

This year's Fund campaign is being directed by Sigurd S. Larmon '14, chairman of the Alumni Fund Committee, and Albert I. Dickerson 'go, executive secretary. Other members of the Committee are Louis E. Leverone '04, Edward K. Robinson '04, William H. Bemis '18, and Ford H. Whelden '25. As in previous years, the class agents will assume major responsibility for the Fund, placing emphasis on the number of contributors rather than upon the amount of contributions. Another repeated feature of the 1937 campaign will be the cartoons of Theodor S. Geisel '25, known as Dr. Seuss.
