A VALUABLE COLLECTION of books and pamphlets by and about H. L. Mencken has been presented to the Baker Memorial Library by Richard H. Mandel '26 of Mt. Kisco, N. Y. The collection is another gift obtained for the College through the activity of the Friends of the Dartmouth Library, an organization started last spring to encourage gifts of original or rare material.

The Mandel gift includes approximately 100 books and pamphlets, together with 25 letters signed by the American author. The collection consists of some volumes by Mencken, some about him, and others with introductions written by him. Two especially rare items are Venturesinto Verse (1903), which Mencken attempted to suppress after only 100 copies had been printed, and What You Oughtto Know About Your Baby (1910), published under the name of Hirshberg but largely written by Mencken.
