We could not conclude this section without reference to the contributions made by the members of the Class of 1959 to Dartmouth's winter athletic scene. Certainly the outstanding team was the frosh basketball squad which compiled a record of eleven wins against two defeats. The Indians lost only to Holy Cross and St. Michael's and later avenged the St. Michael's defeat. Coach Al McGuire, now in his second season at Dartmouth, had an unusually talented team and one from which Doggie Julian will be drawing heavily next year as the Indians seek to retain the Ivy League crown.

Hockey Coach Eddie Jeremiah has started a rebuilding job with his '59 team which turned in a record of twelve wins, two ties and two defeats. The '59 team unfortunately lacked both numbers and depth, but has some strong defensive players, two promising goalies, and several forwards who should help next year.

The freshman swimming team under Coach Karl Michael had four wins and two defeats in dual competition, but is not rated as highly as last year's squad. However, there's needed depth and some help in the sprints and diving.

The '59 squash team, which upset an undefeated Deerfield Academy team in its biggest win of the season, compiled a 3-3 record. Dick Hoehn, son of Coach Red Hoehn, went undefeated and promises to be one of the top college squash players in the East when he steps up to the varsity next winter.

The freshman track team under Coaches Ellie Noyes and Ed Styrna also split even in dual meets with three wins and three defeats. The '59 team was better than average in the dashes, hurdles and middle-distance events, which means the varsity will get assistance in these much-needed departments next year.
