WHEN THE DARTMOUTH faculty convened in Parkhurst Hall on October 17, for its first meeting of the academic year, 24 new members were present as part of the 274 men on the active teaching staff for 1938-39. Three of these new men hold faculty posts without departmental connections, Paul Sample '21 serving as Artist in Residence, with the rank of assistant professor; Clark W. Horton as Assistant in Educational Research, with the rank of assistant professor; and Richard L. Weaver as Naturalist, with the rank of instructor. Mr. Sample and Dr. Weaver will work informally with students interested in their particular fields, while Dr. Horton will assist faculty members in the analysis and preparation of tests.

The new faculty members, grouped by departments and with their degrees, are as follows:

Three members of the faculty hold new emeritus rankings this year. They are Harry Edwin Burton, Daniel Webster Professor of the Latin Language and Literature, Emeritus; Louis Henry Dow, Edward Tuck Professor of the French Language and Literature, Emeritus; and John Hiram Gerould, Professor of Biology, Emeritus.
