AS A MEMORIAL to her husband, Carroll Paul '03, and other members of the Paul family identified with Dartmouth College, Mrs. Helen L. Paul of Marquette, Mich., has contributed funds for construcing a suite of rooms in the southwest wing of Baker Memorial Library for the special use of the Senior Fellows each year. Work is nearing completion and it is expected that the new quarters will shortly be available to the eight seniors who this year have been granted complete freedom from scholastic requirements.
The memorial will probably be called the Paul Room, although no definite name has yet been announced. It will consist of a central lounge, attractively panelled in oak, and six adjacent studies. Two of the studies will be double in size, so that eight Senior Fellows can be accommodated comfortably in the new quarters. The main room will have among its features three relief carvings in wood above the entrance and above each of the doors leading to the two double studies. Hand carved of oak to match the wall panelling and the wooden frieze above it, these figures represent the Oriental. Nordic and Greek contributions to modern culture. The adjacent studies are being finished with pine panelling and are being equipped with desks, chairs and bookcases. For the construction of the Paul Room one large room and four small ones of the southwest library wing have been transformed.
Carroll Paul '03, who retired as Lieutenant-Commander of the United States Navy in 1922, died at his home in Marquette last year. He was the son of Prof. Henry M. Paul '73 and the nephew of Isaac Paul '78. Sons of Isaac Paul who attended Dartmouth were Phillip B. Paul '06 and Richard F. Paul '11, while a grandson, Paul B. Urion '38, graduated last June and another grandson, Richard B. Paul '41, is an undergraduate at present. Other Dartmouth graduates in the Paul family are Henry K. Urion '12 and Paul Howe '14.
