WITH REPRESENTATIVES from 39 states, the District of Columbia, two U. S. territories, and nine foreign lands, the present freshman class has the widest geographical distribution of any class that ever entered Dartmouth. The 676 members of the first-year class come from one more state than the previous record classes of 1931, 1939 and 1941, while the territorial and foreign group of 16 from Hawaii, the Philippine Islands, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, England, Norway, Germany, Switzerland and China is by far the most widely distributed group to enter College from outside the States.

Notable this year is the gain in representation from the southern section of the country, ten such states being represented. More than two-thirds of the entering class come from the Middle Atlantic and New England sections, the Middle Atlantic states having 249 men and the New England states 225. The Central states are represented by 138 men, the Southern states by 26, the Rocky Mountain states 11, and the Pacific Coast states 11. Six states this fall have the largest freshman delegations they have ever sent to Dartmouth. They are Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, and Missouri.

Including the freshmen, the full student body of 2,473 men represents 46 states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and 12 foreign countries. Only Nevada and South Dakota are missing from the list of states. The territories in addition to those represented by the freshmen are the Canal Zone and Puerto Rico, while the additional foreign lands are Australia, Italy and Egypt. New York leads among all four classes as well as among the freshmen, having 506 men to Massachusetts' 491. New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Minnesota follow in that order.

The freshman distribution for this year and last is as follows: 1941 1942 Alabama 0 1 Arizona 0 0 Arkansas 1 1 California 13 7 Colorado 3 8 Connecticut 45 54 Delaware 4 6 District of Columbia 11 10 Florida 2 2 Georgia 0 3 Idaho 1 1 Illinois 40 27 Indiana 5 5 lowa 6 8 Kansas 2 1 Kentucky 3 5 Louisiana 0 2 Maine 6 4 Maryland 4 12 Massachusetts 123 116 Michigan 14 18 Minnesota 21 24 Mississippi 1 0 Missouri 9 12 Nebraska 3 3 Nevada 0 0 New Hampshire 39 32 New Jersey 59 63 New Mexico 0 1 New York 142 139 North Carolina go North Dakota 1 0 Ohio 29 24 Oklahoma 4 3 Oregon 0 3.
