AMBITIOUS PROGRAM FEATURES TRIPS TO SOUTH AND WEST
INSTALLED IN larger offices and with the most ambitious program in several years, the Forensic Union looks forward to an active Dartmouth speech season, highlighted by a long-range debate trip to the South and another to the MidWest.
The Western trip, scheduled for spring vacation next April, is a new event on the forensic schedule. Prof. John V. Neale, debate coach, expects to send four juniors and seniors on a 15-day tour of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and lowa, with the possible addition of another week's swing through Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Debates are tentatively scheduled with Western Reserve, the University of Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, the University of lowa, Wisconsin, the University of Missouri, William Jewell, Kansas University, the University of Indiana, and Ohio State.
Before the climaxing western tour, the varsity debate squad will probably engage in about 25 debates. Harvard, Mt. Holyoke, Middlebury, Cornell, and Columbia, have already been encountered.
On December 1-3 four sophomore and junior debaters will attend the Dixie debate tournament at Rockhill, S. C. John R. Willetts '4O, of Milwaukee, Wis., last year won first honors at this tournament.
On the campus the Forensic Union is attempting to maintain a program of increased meaning to Union members and the undergraduate body. Professors West, Smead, and Tobin have addressed early meetings of the Union. On November 8 the Forensic Union, cooperating with the Dartmouth Peace Council in pre-Armistice Day activities, conducted a miniature House of Representatives, in which a bill calling for the United States to cooperate with foreign powers to prevent war was introduced and discussed before a large group of undergraduates.
The Speakers' Bureau, organized last fall by the Forensic Union to facilitate arrangements for Dartmouth speakers appearing before civic clubs, schools, and similar organizations, gives evidence of an expanding year under the management of John Willetts. Jerry Schnitzer '40 of New York City, assistant manager, has charge of a weekly Dartmouth radio program over Station WNBX, Springfield, Vt.
Officers of the Forensic Union this year are Lou Oberdorfer '39, Birmingham, Ala., president; Syd Craig '40, Winnetka, 111., vice president; George Brand '41, Detroit, Mich., secretary-treasurer; John Little '39, Melrose, Mass., debate manager; and Art Root '40, New York City, assistant debate manager.
