by Prof. Stephan Schlossmacher. Verlag H. u. J. Lechte, Emsdetten, 1938. R.M.9.
In this dissertation, presented to the University of Cologne in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Schlossmacher has made a thorough study of the performances of German plays given in American colleges and universities during the last generation After a general chapter on German theaters in the United States he presents a comprehensive account of the plays given in the German language by student actors throughout the country. Material for this survey was derived from some six hundred questionnaires sent to the Departments of German at colleges and universities with an enrolment of over four hundred students. At the end of the book are numerous photographs of productions of German plays in American colleges, with some unusually good ones of the plays produced by the student society Germania at Dartmouth.
Professor Schlossmacher deserves high praise for his diligence in collecting this material and for his care in presenting it. The book is clear evidence of America's interest and enthusiasm for finding out about the cultures of other countries and as such is an important sociological document. It is, of course, also important as throwing light on an important phase of American education.
