Alumni Carnival
February 1939

IT SEEMS ENTIRELY fitting that the alumni of a "College on Skis" should reunite on a winter's week-end in Hanover, hence the annual Alumni Carnival. This year's Alumni Carnival will be held February 18th through 22d, and a full program of entertainment and competition is being formulated by the Outing Club and the Hanover Inn for the returning Dartmouth graduate and his family.

Over the long week-end of Washington's Birthday, events have been planned which should interest the competitor, the spectator-sportsman, and those who ski and skate "just for the fun of it." Alumni who have not won varsity awards as ski team members will be welcome to compete in the Schniebs-McCrillis competition for the College Championships against the best of the undergraduate non-ski-squad members. The competition includes slalom, downhill, jumping (on the Little Jump), and cross-country events. Otto Schniebs, former Dartmouth coach, and John W. McCrillis '19 of Newport, N. H., donated the trophy especially to encourage the development of all-around skiing ability.

For those not competitively inclined, several ski events which should be interesting to watch are billed. On Saturday afternoon the New Hampshire Class A and B Championships will be held on the Big Jump, while on the following day, a dual meet is planned between the Dartmouth A team and a squad of Italian University skiers, who are to be the guests of the Hanover Inn and the D. O. C. at this time. On Monday, the Children's Carnival, which annually proves to be one of the most interesting points on the winter's schedule, will be held. This event has served as an introduction to competitive skiing and skating for many men now of championship caliber. Warren and Howie Chivers, Ted Hunter, Pug Goldthwait, and many others got their early training in this program of skiing and skating for youngsters.

Over the Alumni week-end the entire facilities of the Hanover Inn and the D. O. C. will be thrown open to the returning Dartmouth man. Skating on the floodlighted rinks will be possible both on Occom Pond and at the Inn, the Oak Hill tow will be running, night skiing will be a reality, as the golf course slopes will be well floodlighted. Ski lessons under Walter Prager and Marshall Fitzgerald of the Hanover Ski School will be available. Ross McKenney's cabin at the foot of Oak Hill will serve as a gathering place for skiers, while alumni will be welcomed at the Outing Club House as another winter sports headquarters.
